XR Culture
XRculture is set to significantly enrich the common European data space for cultural heritage by supporting and expanding the availability of 3D and Extended Reality (XR) contents. A key focus of this project lies in the creation and enhancement of high-quality 3D models, leveraging cutting-edge AI-based techniques that are increasingly prevalent (Objective 1). These advanced models will serve as a foundation for developing XR applications tailored to various use cases such as preservation, education, and tourism, and applicable in different scenarios, including museum collections, heritage at risk, and lost heritage (Objective 3). Furthermore, XRculture will establish best practices for the adoption of these emerging technologies, thereby accelerating the digital transformation of cultural heritage institutions and bolstering their capabilities (Objective 4). This initiative will not only contribute to the individual efforts within the cultural sector but also align with a broader network of projects and other previous DSCH-supporting projects (Objective 5). This integration aims to create a comprehensive and cohesive strategy, enhancing the collective approach to digital innovation in cultural heritage.

about
the project
The XRculture project aims to enrich the European data space for cultural heritage (DSCH) through innovative 3D, AI-based digitization methods and Extended Reality (XR). Focused on creating high-quality 3D models with advanced AI techniques, XRculture addresses key areas like preservation, education, and tourism, and establishes best practices for emerging technologies in the cultural heritage sector.
The project has six key objectives:
- Utilising cutting-edge AI tools like NeRF and Gaussian Splatting to generate new high-quality 3D models and to improve the quality of existing 3D models.
- Creating an open framework for 3D web visualization for CH Institutions to access and manage 3D models.
- Deploying XR applications in tourism, education, and preservation scenarios focusing on museum collections, heritage at risk, and lost heritage, aiming to populate the data space with various cultural heritage assets.
- Enhancing institutions' capabilities through training programs, sharing resources, adapting to new digital frameworks, enhancing digital literacy, promoting best practices, and integrating 3D and XR technologies into education.
- Fostering integration with other projects to ensure compatibility with the European Common DSCH and other European initiatives on Cultural Heritage.
- Ensuring broad dissemination with CH communities, digital platform utilisation, collaboration events, and the development of educational materials.
The project's objectives align with the overall goals of the Digital Europe Programme, particularly in advancing digital skills and accelerating the best use of technologies. The focus on AI, 3D, and XR technologies contributes to the digital transition in the EU and supports a comprehensive strategy for digital innovation in CH.
