Imagine cycling through scenic landscapes, guided by captivating stories that bring local heritage to life. This vision took a step closer to reality during an innovative workshop in Osijek, where participants explored how digital storytelling can transform cycling tourism. Led by Matevž Straus, the session highlighted practical techniques to blend cultural narratives with modern technology, enriching the cycling experience.
This workshop was part of a larger initiative to enhance the attractiveness and accessibility of cycling routes in border areas, focusing on socio-economic inclusion. Known as Inclusive Border Cycling (IBC), the project aims to valorize underutilized natural and cultural assets along existing trails. By integrating local stories into tourism offerings, the initiative not only promotes sustainable tourism but also creates opportunities for vulnerable groups in economically lagging regions.
Digital storytelling, as introduced during the workshop, combines traditional narratives with modern tools such as apps and interactive platforms. Participants learned how to use these technologies to craft immersive experiences, appealing to both younger audiences and the growing "silver age" demographic of senior travelers. Examples included using augmented reality to revive forgotten crafts or showcasing personal stories tied to historical landmarks.
This initiative aligns with IBC's broader goal of fostering social cohesion by connecting communities and travelers through storytelling. It also supports sustainable tourism by highlighting the Danube region’s unique cultural heritage, making the trails competitive in international markets.
