Scan Right
Initiative
Consistently placing QR codes in the same location improves accessibility and ease of use for all—particularly for individuals who are blind or have low vision. QR codes are everywhere—from menus and posters to packaging and public signage. Yet their placement is often inconsistent, making them difficult or impossible to locate, especially for blind and low-vision users. The Scan Right Initiative introduces a simple, universal design standard: Always place QR codes in the bottom-right corner of printed and digital materials.
This small change ensures predictable access for everyone, regardless of ability.
Why It Matters:
- Accessibility: Predictable placement allows screen readers to guide users effectively.
- Usability: Reduces user frustration and increases engagement across all audiences.
- Efficiency: Scanning becomes intuitive and immediate.
- Universality: Works across all formats—print, packaging, digital displays, and signage.
Design Guidelines:
- Placement: Bottom-right corner (default). Adapt to bottom-left for right-to-left languages.
- Size: Minimum 2 × 2 cm (0.8 × 0.8 in) for easy recognition and scanning.
- Contrast: Use high-contrast color combinations (e.g., black on white).
- Labeling: Include a prompt like “Scan here for more information.”
- Tactile Cue (Print): Consider adding a raised border or marker for blind users.
Who Benefits:
- Blind and Low-Vision Users: Gain independence and confidence in accessing QR-linked content.
- Elderly and Less Tech-Savvy Individuals: Experience smoother, more intuitive use.
- All Users: Enjoy a faster, more efficient interaction with printed and digital media.
How to Get Involved:
- Adopt the Scan Right standard across all branded and public-facing materials.
- Share your designs using #ScanRight to support accessibility awareness.
One small placement. A global improvement in access.
